Rocket Cellini from bad to worse

Last week my Rocket Cellini Evoluzione V2 was dumping quite a lot of water out of its little opening right below the brew group when pulling a shot. I also noticed that the right hand brew pressure gauge jumped from 8 bar to 12 bar a few seconds into pulling the shot. Normally it is around 10 bar I think on this machine. So I suspected a faulty OPV valve which I ordered and installed although I found it odd that the brew pressure went as high as 12 bar. Steam pressure was normal btw.

The OPV valve arrived yesterday and installation went without any problems. However, the same issue was still there: pulling a shot > pressure jumps from 8 to 12 bar after a second or 2 and OPV opens dumping water into the drip tray. Conclusion: old OPV was still good. New one acts the same as the old one. Now I suspected some kind of blockage in the brew head.

Today I removed and cleaned the shower screen and diffuser, also replaced the gasket while I was in there. I did several backflush routines to clean the brew head.

While testing the machine after the cleaning, it started acting weird. Or better said, it wouldn't start up at all. As soon as I turn on the machine, I hear a solenoid valve clicking. The green light lights up and after a few seconds it starts flashing like there is no water left in the reservoir. At this point the reservoir is full. The boiler isn't heating up as far as I can tell. It just keeps flashing and there is nothing I can do really.

What I have done so far:

- Checked the 2 safety features (the ones that pop out on top of the boiler) and the both have continuity so I assume that they still work.

- Created continuity between the brass bar and the bolt (where the water reservoir sits). Doesn't make a difference, green light keeps flashing.

Biggest fear right now is that the control box has gone belly up.

What do you guys think?

It would be a bit odd for a faulty PCB to change the water pressure during extraction. I'm not sure it could. Have you considered hooking the machine up to a mains supply (if I remember rightly this is easy done on these machines with a flick of a switch after hook up). You could see if the flow issue is related to the tank feed at least.

Nothing wrong with expansion valve, sounds like rotary pump delivering too much pressure. Bypass could have cruded up with scale. See if you can adjust the pressure down to 9 bar, which might free up the bypass anyway.

Other fault is tank water level sensor related, unlikely to be control box.

Location, water type, age of machine, bought used and when.
