Does it do the same thing (bind up when setting finer) if the grinder is running/turned on?

After grinding, before setting it finer, have you ever removed the top to see if there are fines up inside the top part?

I love a good mystery!!
Morning,

Yes, if I leave it running and turn, same binding noise.

If I remove the top, doesnt seem untoward. See:

Then interestingly when putting it back together, I was careful to not move the disc, so the grind setting was still at 50 when screwing back together. Turned it on, then turned it down and the noise was still there!

The only logical explanation is that the burrs are out of sync somehow. You would have though by removing the top one and putting back in it would have reset the spring?

The supplier actually came back to me to ask for a video overnight, so have sent to them for comment.

Sorry but I don’t understand how you could have not turned the disk/top when you removed and reinstalled it? To remove it you have to unscrew/rotate the top.

please post the reply from the supplier. Very curious what they say. Another idea is to message Turin directly (assuming your supplier is not Turin)

Sorry, bad terminology. I made sure the inner bit (with the 3 prongs) was kept in the same position relative to the outer ring. Hope this makes sense.

Will do when I get a reply. Supplier is DF64coffee.com.

Thanks.

Here is their answer:

"sometimes the burrs tend to sit unevenly on the motor which is a normal occurrence for the vertical grinders. Usually, turning the grinder finer until the sound occurs, then coarser, and repeating this till 0 should get rid of the sound. I have even recorded the burrs shimming to show the difference between the two."

DF64coffee.com are a bit flakey when it comes to comms and some of the finer details but, fairs fair to them, my DF64v came super aligned out of the box. I love that little grinder 😍

I'm sorry but I don't agree with what they told you. I suggest you contact TurnGrinders.com. They're very responsive and should be give the best advice about their grinders.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to remove both the burrs and verify there isn't some debris that has gotten under the burrs but I still say contact Turin. On TurinGrinder.com there is a "contact us" and in my experience with them they are very responsive.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for that. I actually contacted the credit card company with the details and they have credited me for it. So it’s sat in the box waiting for them to reply again so they can pick it up!

Problem now is deciding what to get next. Don’t want to have the same problem again with the DF54. I have lost confidence in it.

Do I risk the DF64 or go for a Niche Zero?

With the experiences you have had its amazing you mention the DF64...

I still believe these guys make good grinders, I owned a DF64V myself that worked very well but was just to loud - a general problem not limited to my unit.

Niche is proven and bullet proof. There are many passing on this forum that you might want to get.

If you want excellent customer service I would like to suggest the Option-O Lafom Casa.

I can appreciate your concern. Let me say I’ve had my df54 for about a year and I love it AND I haven’t had any issues with it. But everyone‘s experience is different.

Thanks for your input. I hear many good things about the DF series. Maybe I was just unlucky. The response from the supplier doesn’t fill me with confidence. Will take a look at the Lagom, thanks.

Maybe get one from a local supplier rather than Singapore , then at least I can turn up on their doorstep!

I am by no means an expert!!! BUT...in my past experience with my previous grinder changing the setting everyday or multiple times per day seemed to cause issues with grind consistency. Again, I'm no expert. This is just what I experienced. I've found with my df54 I only change the setting when I get a new batch of beans. My wife likes cold press and has her own grinder and I'm pretty sure she's never changed the grind setting. Food for thought eh?

Very surprising to hear that as feedback. My DF64v is so quiet it's hard to tell when it's on. It's obviously louder when it's grinding beans but not obnoxiously so. What burrs did you have in yours?

Heya. I only tried with the standard DLC burrs of V2. At least mine made a loud and high pitched noise. I was r told to try SSP in them but I did not have easy access to those at the time. From before I was used to the Niche and Casa with a much lower RPM. Now I run a P64 with SSP UM, much less annoying.

I can imagine a P64 being better all round so that's no surprise. My 64v has the Ti coated burrs which are a pretty good compromise, geometry wise, and haven't made my ears bleed yet! I'd read online that the SSP MP burrs in the 64v were unbearably loud in use but I haven't tried them myself.
