Has the wife been "helping out" when you aren't there?.....

I jest, it's either someone being less sympathetic to it than you, or your cloth has become contaminated with something abrasive. Could it have been dropped? Used for something else without you realising?

Yeah, it's been used to buff windows after cleaning. Thought I washed it out though.

It is how I wipe it. I don't think it's my ring but I'll have to check my technique.
