Sage Barista Express Impress - Coffee dispenses, but with almost no pressure, resulting in weak taste

Hi folks, looking for some help with the below issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Issue:
Coffee is not extracting properly on my Sage Barista Express Impress. Water comes through fine when the portafilter is removed, but when brewing, extraction is either blocked (dripping only) or runs too freely with no pressure.

Steps I’ve tried:

  1. Tested the machine’s water flow – steam wand and hot water both work fine.
  2. Checked water filter in the tank – removed/reinserted, no issue there.
  3. Changed grind size (around 7) – results inconsistent.
  4. Used two cleaning tablets on the original basket – no improvement.
  5. With the original basket:
    • Sometimes only single drops of coffee come through.
    • On a second immediate attempt, coffee flows a bit better (possibly because puck is already damp).
  6. Bought a new 53mm basket (non-Sage brand) – fits fine, but water flushes too quickly with no resistance and no pressure build-up.
  7. Tried different beans and multiple grind sizes:
    • Occasionally it worked properly after changing beans/grind.
    • Now, regardless of bean/grind, I get weak extraction with little to no pressure.
  8. Problem has been inconsistent, on and off, for the past 3–4 months.

Current state:
Coffee dispenses, but with almost no pressure, resulting in weak taste.

@Jarvdb
Thanks for the advice.

I removed screen and gave it a clean. It was a little dusty and have coffee stains on the reverse side. As i had run our of beans, I also purchased a new brand of coffee beans. It has since, picked up pressure and seems to be dispensing better.

However, i find sometimes it struggles (slowly and a reduced amount) to dispense coffee even though the pressure is reaching inbetween the appropriate levels. So in this scenario, i pressed the button again and it dispensed as expected suggesting the grind size may be affecting it? I have switched the grind size from fine to coarse and vice versa and there have been some notable differences. That said, i didnt have to faff around with the machine for the first 12 months or so, its been moreso the case in the past 4-5 months.

Could there still be an underlying issue?

Hi folks, any advice on this? I'm still having issues whilst the machine dispenses coffee. Usually, the second time i press the dispense button, it gets me to a reasonable measure but is there anything else i can service or diagnose?

And any recommendations where i can purchase freshly roasted coffee whether online or local roasteries? I'm in the RM6 (Essex) postcode. Thanks.

hi mate, have you tried resetting the auto dosing? You can do this by pressing in the manual dosing button/knob and the basket selector (the two next to the lights for the the dosage) for roughly 4 or 5 seconds

A couple of tips

make sure you have double basket selected should give you roughly 18g but different beans will grind at different quantities the machine remembers what it dosed last and goes with that also use the razor tool too clean the puck after tamping and blow of loose grinds

use pressurised basket for non “coffee shop” beans anything with a best before rather than roasted on date.

There are loads of roasters part of the fun of coffee is finding what you like I have went from dark espresso to mostly drinking lightly roasted pour over now. Find a good medium roast espresso blend to get used to the machine and then when there experiment

this is worth working through as full of useful advice

good luck
