Hi All,
I don't usually post on forums, but finding reviews about this grinder that is not business related seems hard. Therefore I would like to share some of my thoughts after using it for 4 months daily.
Starseeker
burrs: 74mm flat blind burrs
motor: 250w
variable rpm: 600-1500rpm
adjustment: stepped
Grind timer: Yes
Ionizer: Yes
weight: 6.5kg
My previous grinders were:
recent: ode ssp mp brew / cast V1
2nd: mahlkonig x54 original and ditting steel burrs
1st: eureka specialita
I've enjoyed most of my previous grinders as I've chosen them mainly for there quietness as well as workflow. With the Starseeker I believe it is slightly more quiet at lowest rpm and roughly the same when adjusted to the highest.
Build:
Build quality to my surprise is actually better than all my previous grinders and so is the tolerance. All metal construction except for grind button (nice led display) and hopper. I didn't like the fellow ode because there was play with the auger and was sure it will affect alignment once running. This auger is much, much tighter fit!
Sound:
Slightly quieter than my previous grinders and even quieter at lowest RPM.
Burrs:
74mm blind burrs was what attracted me, as I keep on thinking that 3 big holes on each side of the burr must have a big impact on grind quality/uniformity. However no aftermarket burr choices. It comes stock with espresso burrs, but I paid around $20usd for brew burrs. To be honest upon receiving, the geometry don't look too different too me (see picture below).
Dialing in:
Stepped grinder, did plan to do stepless mod but ended up not needing to. The click range is not small, I would say similar to ode. But I usually use dosage and flow to control. I haven't really played with the RPM yet but the range is quite big from 600rpm up to 1500rpm.
Taste:
I'm definitely no expert and this is just my personal opinion. Espresso provides good body with good clarity (clarity wise better than x54 stock burrs and specialita but less compared to SSP mp and ditting steels).
As for Filter, apologies as lately I've been into espresso, but I will say the MP's and steels are better but not by much.
Workflow/cleaning:
I would say very impressive! No puffing from bellows anymore, use the knocker at bottom to get out most if not all the grounds. With the ionizer it's very clean. I usually set the time for 18 secs on slow grind. For the 1500rpm usually grinds 18g in less than 8 secs. Upon opening the grinder for cleaning last week, I've put the all grounds left inside the machine on the scale. Comes up to be .3g.
Anyway, please let me know if you have any questions if you want to know more about the grinder.
