Gaggia Classic in need of restoration (not working)

I have an old Gaggia Classic that looks to be a 2002 model made in Italy, which is currently not working and therefore will very likely need some repairs. It's got quite a bit of rust on the body (it was like that when I bought it!), a dented top, rusty screws, and the portafilter has seen far better days (it and the basket is pretty black and the plastic handle seems a bit broken).

For background, I put it away in the garage in November 2020 after I got a new espresso machine at which point it was working and I was using it daily. Before putting it away I remember running the machine without water in the tank to try and empty the boiler of water for storage. This month (~4 years later) I took it back out of the garage to see if it still worked and unfortunately it seems that something is not right and I can't get it to work.
  • When turning on the machine and pressing the brew button, the pump makes a loud sound and doesn't draw any water from the tank
  • Opening the steam wand and turning on the brew button (both with steam button on or off) also draws no water
  • I attempted to "prime" the boiler by forcing some water through the tube into the boiler, but it seemed to flow out of the opening back into the tank and not through the group head or steam wand
Maybe it's an easy fix for someone who knows what they are doing, or maybe there's some part(s) that needs to be replaced, but I don't care enough to figure it out so thought I'd see if there is anyone who might like to have a go at repairing it.

It's located in Milton Keynes and I would prefer collection if anyone was interested.

First off I’d try descaling the machine. I find switching the brew switch on and off repeatedly, often clears the problem. But be prepared to spend some time doing this.
if that fails, you’re gonna need to strip the machine. Descale the solenoid and pour descaler into the solenoid ports on the brew head.

the Biggest problem is the rust. It’ll need treated, then possibly welded to give the case back its rigidity.

id say. As long as you’re prepared to put some work in, this is a problem you’d have no worries, doing yourself.
however, you're close, ish, to Leicester. You could pop over, and we could do it together. Or you could leave it, and return when it’s done. No charge.
i can’t, however, do the welding. Despite being a ex robot welder operator. But I can do any prep.
