The problem is these are only ever purchased by coffee nerds who know the value, think you’ll wait a while for anything substantially cheaper. It’s not like say a pavoni or gaggia classic where a normal person could end up with one. There is a reason they’re so expensive, I doubted it before I had them but they feel great and perform brilliantly.

You can get 10 good quality timer scales, for that £150. If you must, go for the waterproof Hario set @£60+ And use what you save, as beer/Bean vouchers.

The harios aren’t going to look good built into a drip tray, they are also far bigger(so probably won’t fit) and inferior in reaction time and build quality.

I use one much the same size as the Hario. And the “ inferior reaction time“ is terminal for espresso making in what way? though you do have low latency bragging rights, I guess.

I get they do everything better. But does that matter, in the real world!

A person comes on asking for acaia lunars for a specific built in project and you tell him to buy £15 scales and spend the rest on beer. I pointed out why acaias are perhaps worth more than the average scale and merely mention latency. You then suggest I said it was terminal for espresso? Useful. If you’re trying to get a specific output in a specific time then yes latency helps achieve this. It you don’t want to take up a large part of you’re drip tray with scales, acaia lunars are great. If you want to keep headroom between cup and portafilter then yes they’re better than cheap ones for that too. Some people like quality, some people like arguments.

Hatios really aren’t that great, lunars are small waterproof and reliable have connectivity and as has been said are the prefered choice of geeky folk like us, cheap scales are exactly that, cheap. But each to their own, I am sure the OP has asked for lunars for a reason.

As a human you could never tell between a 32.90g a 32.95g and a 33g shot. Same goes for a variance of several tenths of a second, whilst timing. So accuracy on that scale, is purely for bragging rights. Plus these things aren’t even given a real certified calibration. So your flying blind, as far as accuracy goes.

You keep talking about bragging, you could apply that to anything where one thing costs more than an other, where do you draw the line on how different they are before you recognise its value. They come with calibration weights and we’re talking grams of delay not 100ths. Not interested in derailing the thread further.

What's your point man? OP wants a lunar for a specific reason, why is this turning into a pi##ing contest?

If you didn't know acaia scales have several other features which OP may want to use, like using the smart espresso profiler to measure flow rate of his shots. As he's mentioned it's for a specific project. Maybe he just likes how they look - either way your comments are not helping him score the scales he actually wants, you're just trying to convince him of what you think is best.

On a more related note - @Spaceman I think you would be doing quite well to get one much cheaper than £150ish as it's rare they go for less

So they come with CERTIFIED calibration weights? Or just weights, from the maker, for calibration. There’s a big difference. Which is my point. Any machine, calibrated by none certified weights, cannot claim any accuracy. Even more so when you are measuring tiny variencies.

I’ve spent the best part of my life working with scales, starting in the early 80 weighing out chemicals for film and print development. They were two pans and a collection of weights. Through mixing high and low PH water mixes, and meds for fish keeping. To now making vape juices. Scales, whatever they cost, are only as good as their calibration. And that’s before we start taking temp and humidity, into account.

@Fez asking them to have an open mind. And stating my case. it’s a matter of perspective.
