I only fill my kettle with enough water for the brew (+ a little extra for prereheating mug, decanter and rinsing filter). I've attached a photo of my resulting bed from a brew this afternoon: (lovely sweet cup though, so as you said - i'm not bothered if i'm enjoying the coffee)

When I spent a while attempting his method I did. But I found it made little difference if I was stirring/swirling the bloom anyway.

Is my well a result of pouring too aggressively then?

I have attempted Hoffman's method before but I find consistency difficult with my standard kettle (despite him saying it works with a standard kettle). I'll probably try again when I have a goosneck and a more controllable pour rate.

@MWJB Is it normal for this 'pouring down the middle' method to create a well in the coffee bed once the water is fully drained through?

@MWJB Would you alter the method for a 14.5:210g recipe? I have a large mug in the morning but prefer a smaller cup in the afternoon.

Thanks, this is really useful. Just to confirm, when you say, "Try grinding around 20", are you referring to the setting on the Wilfa? I'll report back

Correct, I recently bought the Wilfa Uniform after getting frustrated with the inconsistency of a hand grinder I previously owned. I'm still fairly new to pour over coffee but currently using 18g of coffee to 300g of water. Blooming with 40g of water. Then pouring roughly 80g every 30...

I couldn't personally justify spending more than ยฃ30. I bought these for ยฃ17 and they are accurate to 0.1g and time my brew... https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0759J83GT?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title I keep it simple

I recently bought the Wilfa Uniform. I'm super happy, it's a great upgrade from my ยฃ20 hand grinder... Does anyone have any advice from their own personal experience on the best settings for different brew methods, there's so many to choose from!
