Definitely get a La Pavoni . Just make sure you get a very good grinder and a single whole steaming tip. People make the mistake of skimping on the grinder.

I swiftly abandoned the 3 hole and went single. Never looked back.

I'd put money on it being a grind/beans problem, not about pre infusion and lever technique. Stick with it and dial in the grind on the new Rave beans such that a shot takes about 25-30 secs to pull cleanly in one go on a warmed through group and PF, and you should be about there. Once it clicks...

Interesting thread. With my post millennium I typically tamp 16g of grind and get 32g out. Pretty sweet results with Strangers' Burtukaana (Ethiopia). I am going to experiment with reducing the volume out - more ristretto. You can get a lungo by immediately raising the lever and pulling a...

The EK43 is engineering that also happens to be art.

I would say get the best possible one for your budget. I went secondhand on this site, and got a lightly used Mazzer for a relative song. People new to coffee naturally tend to focus on and prioritise the machine, and who can blame them? It is the sexy end of the process and grinders seem dull...

^ You really can't get away without a grinder, and it is really worth getting the best you can on your budget. "You can't skimp on the grinder" is my maxim.

They are fantastic. Punch way above their weight. So long as you are prepared to go on a long steep learning curve and are not lazy. The mastering of the La Pavoni is a wonderful journey and extremely satisfying. Need a good grinder and to swap out the steam tip for a single hole version. Do it...

I like Origin in Hoxton. Aside from the superb coffee the guys that run it are very good chaps to talk to, and they also do lovely tea.

I soon gave up all the weighing stuff once I got the hang of it. Better things to do. Timing the shot I still do to an extent but even there it is pretty obvious when it is too fast or choking.

Pro is just bigger and has a pressure gauge. Not any 'better'. Sorry I couldn't answer fully earlier but I was really busy at work. I think they are ideal for the novice if you have the interest and patience and time to learn. Much more fun and satisfying than more automated machines IMO. A...

I think they are a work of art, a design classic. I could buy one for the looks alone. Achingly desireable. Any SWMBO with an industrial kitchen fetish ought to love them too.
