yep - I get that bit and sure that explains the dimness. but why is it ON when element is heating and OFF when brew ready - vs everyone else's of OFF when element heating and ON when brew ready? right? I have 2 spare thermostats if needed, but it comes to temp OK so doubt its them.

sure others will wade in with proper opinions - but I'd start by reading this https://www.coffeeforums.co.uk/topic/7533-new-members-please-read-this-first/?do=embed#comments a good overview of some of the options and prices!

quick extra question - I noticed that the brew light does actually come on (very dim) when you first turn on the machine, and then goes off roughly when I would usually expect it to switch on. it looks like it's all wired up right and doesn't seem to come back on after pulling a shot...

thanks! now just need to learn to pull that consistently good shot... I saw a couple posts from people with pretty corroded boilers who said they wouldn't want to drink from them. do you know any reason why? surely so long as it makes a seal its ok? yep there was no saving this one!! lucky...

quick update: well that was pretty fun! thanks for all your help. this was the boiler I couldn't get it totally de-scaled, or even out the tarnishing - so I might need to disassemble again some point to finish the job, but its much better now and the scale that's on there doesn't seem...

hi again everyone just waiting for parts to arrive, got the Silvia arm too to pamper it a little... one more Q - is there an opinion on descaling before, during or after disassembly? different people have told me it's 'definitely better' to do each different option. keen to get it...

thanks all, this is great! I'm kind of excited, but sure I'll do something irreparable!! it does make coffee so finger's x'd it looks worse outside than it is inside.. yep, I've got a couple of replacements from espresso shop for every bolt except for probably the two most important ones...

naively reckon I'll be fine with the plate, more worried about getting off those 2 super corroded bolts between the solenoid & the boiler. yeah.. bit under ยฃ100, thought an ok price for a well-looked-after one but starting to reconsider! tools + parts = price adds up quick. cheers for...

thanks both - v helpful. the espresso shop service kit comes with thermostat & gasket so I'll get that and some screws and a shower screen holder. brass shower holder is the same price as oem here...

hiya, thanks, thought I might. 'not terrible' is good news though! do you think the brew switch not lighting could be sorted with a new thermostat pair?

hi all! yet another newby with an eBay 2010 classic. listing said regularly descaled and serviced often though now needs another service as last one was 18months ago. i'm no expert but looking at the shower screen holder and the edges of the boiler it looks like a lot more than 18 months...
