The first I really liked was Monmouth's decaf blend - finally something that tasted like real espresso! Since then, I've tried a couple of seasonal single origins from Square Mile, Finca Borbollon and El Majahual Santa Ana - both are supercritical CO2 process beans from El Salvador. Good results...

That wouldn't surprise me at all. Amazon shipped my (new) machine in the Gaggia box without any external packaging. The box really isn't designed for this and was indeed damaged when it arrived, though the machine was fine. If I was buying it as a gift, I would have returned it.

I also got nowhere with pre-ground while waiting for my grinder to arrive. I guess it will always be too coarse (if they made it finer it might choke some machines, so they just sell something that 'always works' but is never close to ideal). How about one of those ceramic burr hand grinders...

I have a Krups twin blade grinder like the top hit in your fist Amazon link, and would agree with the positive reviews. No complaints, really, and much easier than adjusting the MC2 to a coarse grind! It's pretty easy to clean with a soft brush. There's no timer, so I just use my watch, and use...

As I understand it, there have have been two versions of this: (1) Standard basket (multiple holes that go all the way through the metal) + rubber disc + small plastic nozzle = 'perfect crema'. This is the original arrangement, and what the main Operating Instructions still describe...

I was sorry to see MDC, the classical CD place that previously had the shop, close earlier this year. But it sounds like the new place may provide some compensation, especially as music is still on sale (is there a decent selection?).

I have a new Classic (also had to replace the pressurised basket with a standard), did my first experiments with pre-ground coffee (though fresh rather than Gaggia's own), and had the same experience. But once I got an MC2, I found I could easily grind more than fine enough for a 20-25s double.
  8. Retailer Reviews ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™‰๐Ÿ™Š
Wide selection of pro-quality equipment. Placed a small order in 2009 and it was dispatched within 2 days, item as described.
  9. Misc
Best known for their beans, but small selection of nice equipment. Used in 2009 and had no problems with the order.
  10. Misc
Used once (2009) to buy a moka pot (good selection of Bialetti stuff, including spares). Item was dispatched within 4 days and was as described.
  11. Misc
Trade-oriented site I hadn't really heard of until it turned up in a Google search. Used once this year (2010) - item was delivered promptly and as described. No extra postage charge, so particularly useful for small orders like mine.
  12. Retailer Reviews ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™‰๐Ÿ™Š
Used recently (2010) to buy a grinder and accessories. Items were well-packed, as described, and delivered promptly, and a followup query was answered quickly by email. Including a bag of coffee to dial in the grinder was a nice touch. Note that prices are VAT-exclusive, but adding an item to...

This well-known, wonderfully old-fashioned Soho shop has been going for well over a century (apparently the counter and shelves are the originals). Helpful service, and definitely worth a visit if you're in London; they stock a wide range of coffees, teas, and smaller items of equipment (moka...

It seems almost superfluous to review such a well-known site as a coffee equipment supplier. I've been using them since the 90s, when they only sold books, with very few problems. But for what it's worth I recently (2010) ordered an Espresso machine from them at a very competitive price. I paid...

Thanks! I think it would be useful to ask reviewers to give a URL where the supplier is a web shop - some coffee-related businesses have similar names (e.g. a Google search for 'cafe italia' gives you coffeeitalia as the top hit, a business with rather 'mixed' reviews).
  16. Coffee Lounge โ˜ฎโค
Sounds like a good idea, though I wouldn't have much to say about any of the web suppliers I've tried, who all delivered intact, 'as described' items in a reasonable time, which is really all you can ask. Is it worth starting a list? I'd use any of these again: http://www.gallacoffee.co.uk...

Same here. Unless Gaggia changes its policy I guess they'll all come like this (though I suppose some other suppliers might have 'new old stock'). One other issue I had with Amazon was that they just shipped it in the Gaggia box (which isn't really designed for this) without an outer box. A hole...

Did the Gaggia importers ever respond to the query about the new baskets? Apart from the issues with pressurised baskets in general, I think a lot of their customers won't even realise these are what they have, and will attempt to use them without the plastic nozzle, which seems like a potential...
  19. Gaggia Forum
Yes, especially as it would probably only cost them pennies to include a proper basket as well. According to a post on Coffeegeek, at least one US supplier (wholelattelove) is including both types of basket in both sizes with the Classic, so obviously someone has realised that not everyone will...

I've just bought a Classic (arrived here after a post by Glenn over on TMC where I'd asked about the new filters). From what I can see in the manual that shipped with my machine (not yet updated to cover the new baskets), the original version of the 'Perfect Crema' device was an accessory disc...
